Early Prisons

• John Howard wrote his report 'The state of prisons in England and Wales with an account of some foreign prisons' in 1777
• Prisons were not separated by gender or crime
• gaolers were often corrupt
• prisons were overcrowded
• prisoners couldn't afford release fees
• Overcrowded occurred due to the end of the bloody code and transportation
• there was an increase in crime due to urbanisation and industrialisation
• gaol fever was common due to overcrowding and sewage problems
• John Howard described these prisons as dirty and offensive
