The Victorian Prison

• The Victorian Prison was built in 1847
• The victorian prison was built on the separate system
• It was built to house men, women and children awaiting execution, transfer or trial
• The prisoners slept on hammocks
• Guards had large bay windows to observe prisoners in the excercise yard
• an outbreak of gaol fever broke out in 1851
• Gaol fever occured beacuse of blocked sewers and the hot air carried the disease
• everyone attended daily prayers
• everyone had their own stalls where they could only see the chaplain
