Dominance model

• The dominance model : suggests that men are more dominant in language
• Theorist Spender introduced the idea that males were the ‘norm’. Women are extensions of men, for example men are introduced first ‘Mr and Mrs’
• theorist Stanley found 220 negative terms to describe a women, but only 20 equivalents aimed for men
• Theorists Zimmerman and West found that men interrupt women 96-100% of the time in mixed sex comversations
• theorist Fishman suggested that women are left to do the ‘conversational shitwork’, if they don’t the conversation will fail
• Theorist Holmes - women are often referred to as animals or foods ’cow’ , ‘sugar’
