RP3 - concentrations of salt/sugar solutions of plant tissue

Cards (8)

  • What types of vegetables are used in the osmosis practical?
    • Beetroot
    • Parsnip
    • Potato
  • What measurements should be taken for each cylinder?
Length and mass of each cylinder
  • What volume of 0.5 molar sugar solution should be added to the first test tube?
    10 cm³
  • What volume of 0.25 molar sugar solution should be added to the second test tube?
    10 cm³
  • What should be added to the third test tube?
    10 cm³ of distilled water
  • Why is distilled water used instead of tap water?
Because tap water contains dissolved substances
  • What should be calculated after measuring the cylinders?
    The percentage change in mass
  • What are the steps involved in the osmosis practical?
    1. Prepare potato cylinders using a cork borer.
    2. Measure length and mass of each cylinder.
    3. Place cylinders into test tubes.
    4. Add sugar solutions and distilled water.
    5. Leave overnight for osmosis to occur.
    6. Remove cylinders and roll on paper.
    7. Measure length and mass again.
    8. Calculate percentage change in mass.
