proteins

Cards (12)

  • Just like phospholipid molecules, cholesterol molecules have hydrophobic and hydrophilic regions, Molecules of cholesterol are used to produce steroid-based hormones such as oestrogen, testosterone and progesterone. Cholesterol affects the fluidity and permeability of the cell membrane
  • What are the monomers for a protein?
    amino acids
  • What elements are found in proteins?
    C, H, O, N, and S
  • What foods contain protein?

    meat, fish, eggs
  • What is the use of protein in the body?
    growth and repair
  • What is the food test for proteins?
    Biurets
  • There are 20 different amino acids
  • All amino acids have the same basic structure. The R groups are variable groups- a range of chemical groups- different amino acids have different R groups.
  • red= amino group
    green= R variable group
    blue= carboxyl group
  • Amino acids join by condensation reactions. This process forms peptide bonds and releases a molecule of water.
  • two amino acids joining via a condensation reaction, and forming a peptide bond, results in a dipeptide. When many amino acids are joined by peptide bonds a polypeptide is formed. Proteins consist of one or more polypeptides arranged as complex macromolecules.
  • Breakdown of dipeptides and polypeptides requires breakage of peptide bonds through a hydrolysis reaction. Proteases are enzymes which catalyse the hydrolysis reaction
