The multi-store model of memory was proposed by Atkinson and Shiffrin in 1968 and suggests that memory is a linear process where information passes through memory stores in a sequential manner.
First information arrives at the sensory register in the MSM which receives input from the senses. Only information we pay attention to is transferred to the next store.
Short term memory is the second store in the MSM which can hold 7 items (+/-2) for 15-30 seconds. Information is mainly acoustic and is shown through the serial position effect.
The last store in the MSM is long term memory where information goes if it has been rehearsed. It s believed to have a duration of a lifetime and unlimited capacity. Information is coded semantically.
A strength of the MSM is it's simplicity making it easy to understand and providing a basis for further research into memory.
Negatives of the MSM is it is too simplistic and reductionistic, doesn't consider the roles of strategies in memory such as elaborate rehearsal and fails to explain memory processes with people with some psychological conditions.
