Glacial deposition and landforms

Cards (10)

  • What is till?
Deposited rock debris which is characteristically angular and very poorly sorted
  • What is a morraine?
The generic term for landforms associated with deposition of till within, atop, and below a glacier
  • What is a ground morraine?
A morraine where sediment is transported below a glacier smeared over underlying bedrock
  • What is a terminal morraine?
A morraine where a ridge of sediment accumulates at the furthest extent of an advancing glacier
  • What is a recessional morraine?
A morraine where a secondary ridge of sediment forms at the snout during periods of stability of a retreating glacier
  • What is a lateral morraine?
A morraine where there is a high and almost symmetrical ridge formed among the outer edge of a glacier
  • What is a medial morraine?
A morraine where lateral morraines from two merging glaciers join up, leaving a line of debris in the center of the combined glacier's flow
  • What is a drumlin?
An egg shaped hill made up of glacial till and aligned in the direction of the ice flow
  • What is a till plain?
An extensive plain created by the melting of large ice sheets that detached from a glacier, evening out the topography to creater a mostly flat landscape
  • Which is the difference between lodgement till and ablation till?
Lodgement till has been deposited by advancing glaciers, and ablation till has been deposited by retreating glaciers
