Solvents and concentrations effects

    Cards (4)

    • Phospholipids dissolve in organic solvents like methanol and ethanol
    • Ethanol causes membrane disintegration as it forms temporary bonds with phospholipid heads , phospholipids move out of place and pigment leaks out
    • Ethanol can also effect bonding in proteins and lead to denaturing , further gaps cause more leakage
    • Cholesterol is soluble in ethanol this also causes gaps in the membrane and pigment leakage
