Resistance to social influence

Cards (5)

  • Social support is when the presence of another person who does not conform or obey makes someone more likely to also not conform or obey themselves
  • Two studies that support social support as an explanation for low obedience/conformity:
    • Conformity lowered to 5% in the unanimity condition of Asch's study
    • Obedience dropped to 10% in Milgram's study when two confederates refused to obey orders
  • The two types of Locuses of Control are Internal LOC and external LOC
  • An internal locus of control is when a person believes they have personal control over their behaviour and take more responsibility for their actions - less likely to conform
  • An external locus of control is when a person believes their behaviour is a result of external factors or luck - more likely to conform
