Displacement Reaction

Cards (5)

  • Copper sulfate + iron -> iron sulfate + copper
    CuSO4 + Fe -> FeSO4 + Cu
  • Why does the reaction of between copper sulfate + iron happen?
    Because Iron is more reactive than copper, so it "kicks"/replace copper away to form iron sulfate.
  • What will happen if we place a copper mail into an iron sulphate solution?
    No reaction, because iron is more reactive than copper
  • Thermite reaction:
    Aluminium + iron oxide -> aluminium oxide + iron
    • It is a very exothermic reaction that produces molten. This technique is used to weld rails together.
  • Metal extraction using carbon:
    • Coke (pure carbon) is added with iron ore (iron oxide) and heated in a high tempurtature to produce molten iron. This technique can also be used to extract iron, zinc, tin and lead.
    • Iron oxide + carbon -> carbon dioxide + iron
