xylem and phloem

• phloem tubes transport dissolved sugars from the leaves to the rest of the plant (food)
• phloem is made of columns of living cells with small pores that allow cell sap to flow through
• phloem transports dissolved sugars from the leaves to the rest of the plant for immediate use or storage . the transport goes both directions, this process is called translocation
• xylem tubes take water up from the roots to the leaves and transport it to the stomata
• xylem is made from dead cells strenghtened by lignin
• xylem carries water and mineral ions from roots to stem and leaves
• the movement of water from roots, through the xylem and out the leaves is called the transpiration stream
