Romanian Children

• Piexitio refers to the Romanian children in historical notes.
• Under the dictatorship of President Ceausseseu, birth control and abortion were banned in 1966.
• Romanian women of child bearing age were expected to have 5 children, but this led to unwanted babies being more and thousands of children being abandoned.
• Atwood uses this reference to ask us to consider the effects of banning women's health care such as abortion, and the effects and morality of this.
• The effects of banning abortion are especially prevalent now after it has been banned in many US states due to the overturning of Roe v Wade in 2022.
