• the reason cells are stained in microscopy is to see the difference between heavy and light stained areas
• magnification = the number of times larger the image is than the real size of the object
• resolution = the ability to distinguish beteen two separate points
• 1 graticule devision = number of micrometers divided by number of graticule divisions
• measurement (eye piece graticule) = graticule divisions times magnification factors
• 1 mm -> 1000 micrometer (times 1000)
• 1000 micrometer -> 1mm (divide by 1000)
• 1 micrometer -> 1000nm (times 1000)
• 1000 nanometer -> 1micro m (divide 1000)
