Diagnostic reagent strips as biosensers

Cards (4)

  • immobilised enzymes that work by producing a colour change of a chemical reaction into s electrical signal. These immobilised enzymes act as diagnostic tools.
  • for example, Clinistix.
This works by using GLUCOSE OXIDASE and another enzyme PER-OXIDASE.
Peroxidase catalyses the breakdown of Hydrogen Peroxide which is produced by glucose oxidase). The oxygen reacts with the colour dye producing a colour change in the strip.
  • Intensity of the colour in Clinistix indicates concentration of glucose
  • Another example is glucose meters. This measures the level of glucose in a blood droplet on the strip.

The amount of gluconic acid made by glucose oxidase is turned into a electrical signal.

It is then converted into a digital readout
