2. Organisation of the organism

Cards (16)

  • Cell membrane: a semi-permeable barrier that surrounds the cell and controls what enters and leaves the cell
  • Cytoplasm: where chemicals reaction take place
  • Nucleus: contains DNA and control the cell
  • Mitochondria: organelle where aerobic respiration take place
  • Ribosome: makes protein and can be found floating within the cytoplasm
  • Vacuole: stores food and water and helps to maintain shape of the cell
  • Cell wall: rigid to help keep shape of cell
  • Chloroplasts: contain chlorophyll, which absorbs light energy for photosynthesis
  • Red blood cell: transport of oxygen from lungs to body cells, has a biconcave shape and no nucleus to increase surface area, flexible
  • Ciliated cell: move and push mucus (tiny hairs: cilia)
  • Root hair cell: absorb mineral and water; elongated shape to increase surface area
  • Xylem cell: transport water and support plant; no cytoplasm, no cross walls, lignin -> strong and waterproof
  • Palisade cells: photosynthesis, have lots of chloroplasts, thin walls, thin cell walls
  • Tissue: a group of similar structured cells working together to perform a shared function
  • Organ: a group of tissues that work together to perform a specific function
  • Organ system: a collection of organs that work together to carry out a particular task
