the Heart pumps blood containing oxygen and nutrients around the body.
The circulatory system, made up of
arteries
,
veins
and
capillaries
carries
substances
around the body distributing them
efficiently
Pulmonary -
Anything to do with the lungs
Atria
- Upper chambers of the heart
ventricles
- Lower chambers of the heart
Arteries
- Blood vessels that carry
blood away
from the heart
veins
- Blood vessels that carry
blood
back towards the
heart
¡Atrium and Ventricles are
chambers
of the heart, there are
4
of them.
Valves are flaps of connective tissue that stop blood from flowing backwards
The
Aorta
takes blood to the body from the
Left
Side of the heart, the
Vena Cava
returns it to the
right hand side.
Key features of a mass transport system -
A
suitable transport medium
Network
of tubes/vessels to carry the transport medium
A way of making sure they
travel
in the
right direction
A means of ensuring
fast supply
(i.e. this could be a
pump
or simply
maintenance
of a
concentration gradient
)
open circulatory system -
Heart pumps blood (or similar fluid) into a body cavity.
In insects the “blood” is called haemolymph.
The heart is elongated and stretches along the length of the body and haemolymph drains back into the heart to be re-circulated.
Haemolymph doesn’t travel to the lungs to get oxygen because there are no lungs!
