    epiphet referring to odysseus skills in crafting stories as it’s in his perspective
  • Pathos= “a man’s fatherland and parents are what holds sweetest”
    uses sympathy to win over phaecians hoping they will help him get home
  • simile= “with a voice like the voice of the gods”
    used when describing bard with phaeacian’s, an example of flattery to make his story more reliable
  • simile= “thick as the leaves and flowers in the spring” referring to the ambush of cicones
  • pathos= “the rest of us eluded our fate and got out alive”
    shows the crew barely survived emphasising brutality to phaecians
  • In cicones, odysseus‘ narrative is in his own perspective, and he is well known for his oratorical skills in lying and deception
  • claims to remain faithful to penelope yet mentions he has affair with circe and calypso
  • cyclopes plot
    1. odysseus explains uncivilised nature of cyclopes
    2. with wine gifted from priest of apollo, the crew arrive at cave and eat cheese
    3. polyphemus returns and is furious so he eats 2 crew members
    4. odysseus crafts a plan: gets polyphemus drunk, stabs him in the eye with a stake
    5. they escape under flock at dawn and when sailing odysseus reveals his identity
    6. polyphemus curses him with telemus propechy that he has a long journey home
