Electoral College should be abolished

• The winner of the popular vote can fail to be elected - Hillary Clinton in 2016
• It encourages candidates to focus on a small number of swing states - Florida or Ohio
• faithless electors pose a threat to the democratic process because they don’t reflect the voters’ choices . there was a record seven such electors in 2016 - it’s a growing issue
• Donald Trump tweeted in 2016: the electoral college is a disaster for a democracy
• much of the support for reform comes from bad losers . Most American citizens don’t see electoral college reform as priority
• it frequently exaggerates margins for victory
• smaller states are over represented. California has one electoral vote per 712,000 people . Wyoming has one electoral vote per 195,000 people
• polls suggest that there is a popular support for replacing the electoral college system with a direct popular vote
