  • Chromium (III) fluoride
    CrF3CrF_3
  • Dinitrogen monoxide
    N2ON_2 O
  • Carbon monoxide
    COCO
  • Nitrogen dioxide
    NO2NO_2
  • Calcium fluoride
    CaF2CaF_2
  • Naming Ionic Compounds
    • Metal is the first name
    • Non-metal has the suffix -ide
    • In between is the charge of the metal (Roman numerals)
    • Note: Usually, we write the charge of transition metals since they are ambiguous. However, the charges on group 1 and 2 metals are clear and not always necessary
    • E.g. Calcium fluoride \Leftrightarrow Calcium (II) fluoride \Leftrightarrow CaF2CaF_2
  • Naming Covalent Compounds
    • Name the non-metal furthest to the left on the periodic table
    • Name the other non-metal with -ide suffix
    • Prefixes: mono-, di-, tri-, tetra-, penta-, hexa-, hepta-, octo-, nova-, deca-
    • If mono- is the first prefix, it is understood and not written
    • E.g. Monocarbon monoxide \Rightarrow Carbon monoxide \Leftrightarrow COCO
