Group 2 metals with water and with oxygen

    Cards (4)

    • Beryllium has no reaction with water, or steam even at red heat
    • Magnesium burns into a steam to produce magnesium oxide and hydrogen
      Mg(s) + H2O(g) -> MgO(s) + H2(g)
    • Calcium, strontium, and barium all react with cold water with increasing vigour to give the metal hydroxide (white precipitate) and hydrogen
      M(s) + 2H2O(l) -> M(OH)2(aq) + H2(g)
    • The metals burn in oxygen to give a simple metal oxide
      2M(s) +O2(g) -> 2MO(s)
