  • What is the ID?
    Part of the brain that is concerned with our basic needs; the source of motives behind our pleasure. Eg for an infant it is all about having basic needs met. Gradually the child realises it cant have everything it wants. It suppresses the id urges in order to fit in with society
  • What is the ego?
    The ego tells us what is real. It is practical and rational. It gives our internal mind a perception of what is happening on the outside world.
  • What is the super ego?
    Your conscience - an inner parent. Gives us a sense of right or wrong, monitors behaviour and decides what is acceptable
  • What is collective neurosis?
    A neurotic illness that afflicts all people
  • How does collective neurosis link to religion?
    Freud claims religion itself was a neurosis caused by traumas deep within the psyche.
  • What is wish fulfilment?
    Satisfying urges and desires. People often cannot fulfil their deepest desires so they dream about them instead.
  • How does wish fulfilment link to religion?
    Religion fulfils our wishes for someone to look after us in a harsh world when we are feeling panic and helplessness. Freud argues that the ethical demands of religion are nothing more than rules to control people and make us feel happy about God. Wish fulfilment leads us to believe that God speaks to us
