  • In Aragon, an agricultural province, peasants rose up and seized the land that they worked. The central government was abolished and replaced by the council of Aragon, to organise production and defence against the Nationalists. The council was highly democratic, and representatives enjoyed no special privileges.
  • Local committees organised food rationing. Each person received a free, equal share100g of sugar, meat and rice per day. Coffee and cigarettes were originally given away for free, but eventually cigarettes had to be rationed due to high demand.
