Reaction with cold concentrated H2SO4

Cards (3)

  • What’s sulphuric acid written out

    H-OSO2OH
  • How to do the mechanism
    1. The first stage : draw a curly arrow from the pi bond in the alkene to the H in the acid
    2. Make sure delta signs are present
    3. Draw a second curly arrow from the H-O bond to the H
    4. The next stage : draw the alkene again without the double bond, a plus sign, and an extra H attatched
    5. draw A third curly arrow from the negative sign on the now OSO2OH with a lone pair to the positive sign
    6. the last product should be the main result with the OSO2OH replacing the plus sign
  • How does reaction with h2SO4 create an alcohol
After OSO2OH replaces the + sign, it gets hydrolysed by H2O, to leave behind OH
