Blood is a tissue consisting of plasma, in which are suspended: • red blood cells • white blood cells • platelets
Plasma is the liquid part of blood that carries dissolved substances such as nutrients, gases, hormones, waste products and antibodies.
White blood cells (leucocytes) have different functions including fighting infection by engulfing bacteria or viruses.
Red blood cells (erythrocytes) contain haemoglobin, which binds to oxygen molecules. They transport oxygen from the lungs to all parts of the body.
