Sampling methods

Cards (3)

  • Continuous sampling
    • All instances of a target behaviour are recorded.
    • For complex behaviours, however, this method may not be very feasible or effective
  • Event sampling
    • Counting the number of times a particular behaviour occurs
    • For example, how many times an individual smiles at a movie
    • Strength: Adds focus/structure to the observation
    • Weakness: May miss relevant behaviour that isn't on the checklist
  • Time sampling
    • Recording behaviour within a pre-established time frame
    • For example, making notes on what an individual is doing every 30 seconds
    • Strength: Adds focus/structure to the observation
    • Weakness: Can miss behaviour that occurs outside of recording periods
