Graphite

Cards (5)

    • consists of flat layer carbon
    • each carbon atom is bonded to 3 other atoms using its 3 outer electrons
    • one electron from each carbon atom is delocalised along the layers of carbon atoms
    • these delocalised electrons allow graphite to conduct electricity
    • the forces between layers are very weak and they are able to slide past each other
    • makes graphite soft and useful as lubricant
    • graphite has very high melting and boiling point
    • a lot of energy is needed to break strong covalent bonds
