New Laws being Introduced

• In the plantations on the West Indies, enslaved Africans outnumbered the Europeans by 20 to 1
• The outnumbering led to many new, strict laws being introduced to allow for the harsh treatment for enslaved people, including executions and beating, for:

  • beating a drum;
  • gathering after dark;
  • singing African songs
