Oxidation & Reduction

Cards (4)

  • Oxidation is loss
    Reduction is gain
  • What do you call reactions when something is reduced and oxidised?
    REDOX reactions
  • If something is reduced, it gains. What does this mean?
This means that electrons are "used" so they go on the reactants side. for example - 2H+2H^+ 2e H2\ 2e^-\rightarrow\ H_2
  • If something is oxidised, it loses electrons. What does this mean?
This means electrons are "made" so they go on the products side. For example - Mg  Mg2++Mg\ \rightarrow\ Mg^{2+}+ 2e\ 2e^-
