• Catholic church:

  • was a supporter of the spanish monarchy
  • pope supported r/w - protect traditional morality
  • church was in a weak position - people lost faith in church
  • anticlericalism attacks emerge
• The army:

  • armed forces was dominated by conservatives, supporters of the monarchy and officers who supported Primo De Rivera
  • Spanish people had little faith in their military leaders.
  • officers saw themselves as defenders of traditional Spanish culture and catholic values
  • Junior officers took a different view - more careeristic - upset about the laws stopping promotions
• landowners:

  • owned latifundias
  • intent on maximising profits.
  • feared l/w - threatened their position
  • feared democracy: poor would expand their rights at the expense of the traditional elites
