germination

    Cards (3)

    • conditions for germination experiment
      • water increases metabolic activity and swells up seed until seed coat bursts and embryo exits seed. experiment: dry cotton wool
      • oxygen for aerobic respiration for energy for germination. experiment: layer of oil (O2 can't pass) on top of boiled (anaerobic) and cooled water (denature enzymes)
      • warmth for enzymes. experiment: put in fridge
      • control setup: moist cotton wool
    • germination - start of growth in seed into young seedling
      • plants have 1 or 2 cotyledons which contain food reserves which supply the young seedling with food
      • the cotyledons fulfil this role until the plant grows its own leaves for photosynthesis
      • after taking in water, the seed coat (testa) splits which leads to production of the plumule (first emerging shoot) and radicle (first emerging root)
    • label
      A) testa
      B) embryo root
      C) micropyle
      D) cotyledon
      E) embryo shoot
      F) plumule
      G) radicle
