Explanations for conformity

• Normative social influence- Influenced by a desire to feel normal and avoid rejection. This refers to social rules that govern behaviour and the need to fit in. This could lead to public agreement not necessarily a private agreement.
• One positive of NSI is real life application. This helps us to understand when we conform in a unambiguous situation.
• One weaknesses of NSI is that it doesn't explain why people conform on a long term basis.
• Another weakness is that it doesn't explain individual differences. Does that mean everyone wants to conform?
• Informative social influence is when a person does not fully understand the situation and conforms because they want to be right. Suggests it is a agreement with the group cause of uncertainty about responses or behavior.
• One strength of ISI is real life application. This is because they help us understand why we conform on a long term basis and why people who are less intelligent conform.

• Another weakness of NSI is that it doesn't explain why intelligent people conform. This is because they are very knowledgeable which means there would be no need to conform according to ISI because they understand the situation
