The participants were a group of 11 American patients who experienced severe epileptic seizures that could not be controlled by medication.
The split brain operation is a possible remedy for these 11 American patients. Involved cutting through most or all of the cerebral commissures that connect the left and right hemispheres of the brain.
This was an opportunity sample of patients referred to the White Memorial Centre in Los Angeles.
One patient was female, in her thirties, she was a mother and a housewife. She had her split brain operation four years prior to this study. Another was male and had his operation 5.5 years before the study.
For most patients the operation reduced the frequency and severity of their seizures.
