  • Van Gogh used thick, layered and fast brush strokes in most of his work, seen in the foreground on the Quinces this added visual and actual texture and an expressive quality to his work
  • He used vivid contrasting colours to represent his intense world. Using black for outlines and shadows which was rejected from the impressionists and contrasting colours to create striking contrast making the subject matter stand out seen in wheatfield with crows.
  • Van Gogh was heavily influenced by post impressionism but also Japanese prints. 'The bedroom' features bright colours and thick black outlines, outlines of the Japanese style making it look flat/2D
  • Van Gogh struggled with poor mental health and would express this through quick, emotional and fluid brush strokes shown in 'The starry night' conveying a troubled/ tormented mind, creating intensity in his work.
  • Van Gogh often used colour to convey emotions and moods, he used large amounts of deep blues, seen in the back/foreground of 'still life with Quinces' this could reflect his long periods of depressed states consuming his life and work
