    • Workers were angry because of the economic problems (after WW1) and the lack of progress in their rights since the 'revolution'.
    • During spring 1919, series of strikes and industrial discontent (being exploited by bourgeoisie) in the industrial areas. Demanded shorter working hrs and a government based on councils.
    • Protests weren't co-ordinated - also no strong leadership and the KPDs clear strategy meant lack of support amongst people.
    • Use of army and freikorps led to serious loss of lives.
    • Revolutionaries had some success in Bavaria (Weimar federal style of government).
    • A soviet republic was proclaimed there in march 1919 but freikorps were used against them. Over 700 were killed and right wing government were established.
    • End of summer 1919- opportunity to establish communism in Germany was at an end.
    • Next three years- unrest continued but republic didn't face any serious threat from the left wing.
    • Kapp putsch- unsuccessful attempt to take advantage of weimar's weaknesses.
