PHARYNX AND LARYNX

• Pharynx (throat) - common opening of the digestive and respiratory systems

  Respiratory: receives air from the nasal cavity

  Digestive: receives air, food, and drink from the oral cavity
• 3 regions of the pharynx (superior to inferior):

  • nasopharynx
  • oropharynx
  • laryngopharynx
• Larynx (voicebox) - located in the anterior part of the laryngopharynx and extends from the base of the tongue to the trachea
• Thyroid cartilage (Adam's apple) - largest cartilage in the larynx
• Laryngitis - inflammation of the vocal folds
