  • A healthy lifestyle is a way of life that promotes overall wellbeing. Good health is not just the absence of disease or illness, it is a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being. This includes:
    1. Eating sensibly
    2. Regular physical exercise
    3. A healthy social Life
    4. Adequate Rest
    5. Regular medical check ups
    6. Practicing good personal hygiene
  • In recent years, doctors have noticed that the ill health of their patients can be directly linked to their unhealthy eating habits.
  • Healthy eating does not mean that you have to stop eating your favorite foods, it means eating less of what is unhealthy and more of what is healthy.
  • Reduce your fat intake by eating more white fish and less red meat and chicken, skinning chicken and cutting away fatty outer layers of red meat, baking and grilling instead of frying, using low fat products, and avoiding processed meats and smoked food.
  • Reduce your salt intake by choosing plain unsalted snacks, seasoning foods with less salt and more natural flavours, reading labels carefully and choosing low sodium foods, and cutting back on processed meats and smoked food.
  • Reduce your sugar intake by putting less sugar in beverages, choosing natural unsweetened beverages, avoiding sweetened cereals, cutting out syrup, sugary toppings and icing, and saving sweets for special occasions.
  • Add high fiber staples to your diet by using ground provisions such as sweet potatoes, cassava and yam instead of English potatoes, using whole wheat flour instead of white flour, and choosing brown rice.
  • Add fruits and vegetables to your diet by being creative in your cooking, preparing vegetable rice instead of white rice, using fresh fruit drinks, and trying to eat 2 servings of fruit and 2 servings of vegetables on a daily basis.

    A Social life may refer to: an individual's interpersonal relationship with people within their immediate surroundings or general public. A healthy social life means taking time to relax and have fun with friends and family. This is vital to everyone. It gives you an
    opportunity to interact with others, it imparts a sense of belonging and it helps to relieve stress.
  • 3. Adequate Exercise
    Car, running water in homes, elevators and all the other labor-saving amenities that we enjoy, help to prevent our bodies from getting the amount of exercise that we need for perfect health. To compensate for this, people with inactive lives should add a game to their list of activities or exercise for 20-30 minutes three or more times a week. The benefits of exercise are shown in the diagram below.

    Keeps the body's immune and excretory systems in peak condition
    improves general fitness, i.e. stamina, suppleness and strength
    strengthens the heart muscles and improves blood circulation
    Exercise also adds to your beauty by improving body posture. However, too much exercise can be harmful to your joints. So athletes beware!
  • Adequate rest is essential for good health and well-being, and the best form of rest is sleep.
  • Sleep plays a vital role in good health and well-being throughout your life.
  • The way you feel while you're awake depends in part on what happens while you're sleeping.
  • During sleep, your body gets rid of waste that builds up during the day, the brain, and nerves use this opportunity to rest and relax, and the muscles repair and relax.
  • In children and adolescents, this is the time when most of the hormones for growth and development are released.
  • The amount of sleep you require depends on your age, with babies needing about 18 hours, while adolescents and adults need 6- 8 hours of undisturbed rest.
