LATENT HEAT OF WATER PRACTICAL

Cards (4)

    • set up a heater attached to a voltmeter and ammeter
    • place it in a funnel above a beaker
    • measure the beaker's mass and record
    • put some crushed ice into the beaker and find the mass of it
    • put it in the funnel with the heater
    • switch the stopwatch on and heater at the same time, wait 3 minutes
    • record the mass of the beaker plus water
  • Energy from the heater:
    • E = I x V x t
    • energy = current x PD x time
    • J = A x V x s
    • joules = amps x volts x seconds
  • if energy transfer was 100% efficient, all the energy from the heater would be transferred to the ice
  • we assume:
    • energy from heater = mass x Latent heat of fusion
    • E = mL
