  • Why is it being quick an advantage?
    P - The LP can be very fast and responsive. Especially in times of emergency as laws can be introduced, debated, and enacted quickly. 
    D - For example, as seen with the Coronavirus Act 2020 which gave the government emergency powers to manage the pandemic. It passed all parliamentary stages and royal assent within a week. 
    E - Parliament Acts 1911 and 1949 reduce the powers of the House of Lords and means our elected government can leapfrog to the King. Because of Parliamentary Supremacy, the courts must apply it. 
  • Why is it being flexible an advantage?
    P - Allows those who are NOT Ministers to introduce bills. 
    D - Useful if Government does not want to introduce controversial legislations. 
    E - Covers areas of law which the Government would not have time to consider. 
  • Why is it being a thorough process an advantage?
    P - As both Houses Must approve it there are many opportunities for review and reflection resulting in well drafted Laws. 
    D - In Particular, experts in the House of Lords E.g. Sir Roberts Winston of the science and tech committee were very influential in the passing of Human Fertilisation and Embryology Act  
    E - More Recently there was expertise in Covid-19 enquiry. 
  • Why is it being an example of democracy an advantage?
    P - General publics can influence the process by voting for MPs to represent their interests in the Commons every 4-5 years
    D - MP represent different political view for which the public vote. 
    E - MPs also can voice their opinions on behalf of the public.
