Greater provision of services for elderly such as geriatric care, old folks homes
etc. All of which place increased strain and costs on government healthservices.
Need to provide subsidised transport with OAP bus passes.
Increased strain also placed on health and welfare services.
Government has to provide money for pensions.
Fewer people are of working age (active population). There are fewer people
paying tax & developing the economy.
Need to increase taxes for those of working age which can lead to resentment.
Possible need to raise the age of retirement, fewer jobs remaining for younger
people.
Schools, nurseries, maternity wards and other services needed by youngerage groups may close because of lack of demand.
Possible redundancies in industries which may cater for goods needed by these younger groups as demanddeclines. E.g. pram making
Possible future shortage of people of working age, in-migration may need to be encouraged which may lead to tension between different cultures and or ethnic groups.
The grey pound - elderly people have more money available to spend (mortgage probably paid off) so they
can help boost the economy
