  • crop yield is usually effected because of pests damaging the plants.
  • traditionally farmers sprayed their crops with pesticides to kill insect pests. but this is time consuming, expensive and sometimes harmful to the farmers . also kill useful insects like pollinators and can kill animals that eat poisoned insects. also damages soil and water
  • crops can be genetically modified to be resistant to weed killers, increasing yield
  • poor countries GM rice to contain beta carotene, which is used in the body to make vitamin A, known as golden rice
  • can be used for plants which grow in difficult conditions like drought or cold temperatures. and resistant to disease. increase yield and farm low quality land , helps with food security
  • concerns that GM crops could breed with other plants which would spread modified genes to populations. this is why they are banned in some countries . also concerns on eating them
