Ventilation Perfusion Matching

• • gas exchange requires air and blood to be in the same place - called ventilation perfusion matching
• • alveolar dead space can cause a V/Q mismatch due to something blocking the blood flow, so ventilation is present but perfusion isnt
• Shunt:

  • when ventilation is not present as air cant get to the alveoli, but the alveoli is still being profused by capillaries
  • this is another type of V/Q mismatch
