Divisions of the Nervous System

• Central nervous system (CNS)- brain and spinal cord, regulates physiological processes, receives info from the senses and transmits it to the effectors
• Peripheral nervous system (PNS)- motor and sensory neurons, relays impulses to and from the CNS
• Somatic nervous system- involved in conscious, voluntary responses, feeds into the main sensory input
• Autonomic nervous system- controls all involuntary responses- breathing, heart rate, digestion, blinking, stress, sexual arousal
