Lipids (wip)

    Cards (5)

    • Lipids are nonpolar because they have a greater number of carbon-hydrogen bonds than do carbohydrates.
    • Cis-unsaturated fatty acid
→ both hydrogens around the double bond are on the same side, causing a bend in the chain and creating more space between the carbons. this makes the fat liquid at room temperature
    • Trans-unsaturated fatty acid
The hydrogens around the double bond are on opposite sides causing a straight chain and less space between the carbons. This makes the fat solid at room temperature.
    • Waxes: long chain alcohol (an alcohol with many carbons) + a fatty acid Coat the surface of leaves to prevent water loss
    • Steroids: 3 Hexagons + 1 Pentagon
