Fleming's Left Hand Rule

Cards (6)

  • What is the motor effect?
When a current carrying conductor is placed in a magnetic field experiences a force
  • Explain how the motor effect is caused?
The field created by the current interacts with the magnetic field
  • How can the force be increased?
By increasing the magnetic flux density, the length of the wire or the size of the current
  • What is the equation for force?
Force = magnetic flux density x current x length
  • A 10cm length of wire with a 4A current flowing passes through a magnetic field. What magnetic flux density is require to create a 2N force on the wire?
    5 tesla
  • How can Flemings Left hand rule be used to find the direction of the force on a conductor?
    1. Hold your left hand so that your thumb and first 2 fingers are all at right angles to each other 2. Align your first finger so it points in the direction of the magnetic field. Then rotate your wrist so the second finger points in the direction of the current. 3. Your thumb will point in the direction of the force
