Procedure (exp. 1)

Cards (6)

    1. Participants were tested using laptops loaded with software and sent to them to use in their own homes.
  • 2. Participants were given a GO/NO-GO task. This involves first being shown a target, for example the target could be a female photograph.

Then, on each trial, the participant is shown a female or a male photograph.

The participant is instructed to press a button on any trial where the photograph matches the target (=go) and is instructed to resist action if the photograph does not match the target (=nogo)
  • 3. Participants were instructed to respond as quickly and accurately as possible.
  • 4. Photographs were displayed for 500 milliseconds and there was a one second interval between photographs.
  • 5. A total of 160 trials were presented per run in pseudo randomised order (120 GO , 40 NO-GO)
  • 6. Each participant took part in two 'runs' - a hot and a cool version. In the hot version participants saw faces with emotional expressions (fearful or happy) . In the cool run the faces were neutral.
