Antibiotics and painkillers

Cards (4)

  • Painkillers:
    • Relieve pain
    • block nerve impulses communicating to the brain + pain
    • bring down an elevated temperature
    • No effect on viruses
    • Don't cure faster - have to wait for immune system to overcome pathogen
    • e.g. paracetamol, aspirin, calpol
  • Antibiotics:
    • Work inside body + destroy pathogens
    • First became available in 1940s
    • damage bacterial cells without harming other cells
    • Some kill a wide range of bacteria
    • can't kill viruses
    • strains of bacteria that are becoming antibiotic resistant to antibiotics are evolving
    • have to finish the course of antibiotics to kill all the bacteria
    • e.g. penicillin
  • Can Antibiotics kill viral pathogens?
They have no effect on viral diseases as they reproduce inside the cells of your body. It's extremely difficult to develop drugs that will kill the virus without damaging the cells/ tissues of body aswell
  • Explain how strains of antibiotic resistant bacteria are evolving?
    Mutation and natural selection.
