Transformers

Cards (8)

  • What does a basic transformer consist of?
A primary and secondary coil wrapped around a soft iron core
  • What is needed for transformers to be 100% efficient ?
The power output would be the same as the power input
  • What does a step-up transformer do?
It increases the potential difference - It has more turns on the secondary coil than the primary coil
  • What does a step down transformer do?
It decreases the potential difference - it has more turns on the primary coil than the secondary coil
  • Describe the functioning of a transformer
An alternating current flows through the primary coil (which is basically a solenoid) - The alternating current induces an alternating magnetic field - The alternating magnetic field in the iron core induce an alternating potential difference in the secondary coil - If the secondary coil is part of a complete circuit , an alternating current flows through it
  • When the potential difference is increased , the current is decreased and vice verse
  • Voltage (primary) / Voltage (secondary) = number of turns (primary) / number of turns (secondary)
  • voltage (secondary) x current (secondary) = voltage (primary) x current (primary)
