  • Charles' failure to capture London 1643 winter
    • Charles was in a stronger position but failed to capitalise on the opportunity to march on London after Edgehill battle and went along the Thames Valley instead
    • Took Charles 18 days but Earl of Essex reached it first, royalist failure at turnham green
  • Charles' failure to negotiate in Spring 1643
    • Charles was in a strong position but did no engage with the Treaty of Oxford talks which was a rewrite of the 19 propositions
    • Why? Because he disliked compromising and had excessive confidence and his advisors encouraged the war
  • Charles' three pronged strategy
    • Had initial success in the North (Adwalton), the West (Bristol) and the SouthWest (Roundway down, led to the western association)
    • But pointless sieges in Hull and Gloucester made the strategy fail.
  • Irish Cessation Treaty (1943)
    • Charles signed a truce with the Irish Catholics to bring 8,000 troops to England from Ireland
    • Caused concerns about him being sympathetic to catholics and proves that he's untrustworthy
    • Made Parliament make radical steps to win and pursue the alliance with the Scots.
