  • The Solemn League and Covenant (1644)
    Terms: 21,000 Scots will aid Parliament, Pledge to fight for Parliament's rights, Plan to implement Presbyterianism in England
    Impact: Favours in Parliament, intervene at marston moor which is a large victory and the royalists lose the North.
    BUT, they do not go anymore south than Nottingham
  • Self-denying Ordinance
    • This was made due to the army being led by a peace faction (earl of Essex and earl of Manchester) who were too cautious
    • So, this ordinance banned MP'S and Lords from military command (except Oliver Cromwell) and were replaced by professional soilders
  • New Model Army
    • Scots did not want to go South, Army was dividied by regional associations
    • NMA abolished regional associations and formed one professional army, made of committed puritans, with a balanced composition and excellent leadership (Cromwell, Fairfax)
    • The NMA never lost a battle and used standardised equipment and paid them well.
  • After the battle of Naseby with the New Model Army there is no standing royalist army
  • London
    • London had 400,000 residents and the London Mob to influence, with trades to continental Europe and greatest tax income in England
  • Navy
    • Navy intercepted the Dutch supporting Charles
    • Controlled imports and exports, important for tax collection
    • Help relieve the siege of Hull
    • preventing the royalists importing and exporting resources
  • Weekly Assessment Ordinance
    • Used the same formular as Ship Money
    • Raised £600,000 pa and funded the New Model Army
  • Excise Ordinance
    • Tax on the production and licensing of goods and raised £300,000 per year.
