Respiration

• Respiration: the release of energy from food
• Aerobic respiration: release of energy from food using oxygen
• Anaerobic respiration: release of energy from food without oxygen
• Respiration equation: Glucose + Oxygen = Carbon Dioxide + Water + Energy
• Glucose gives energy, and since it’s the simplest/smallest carbohydrate, it can enter our cells through diffusion
• Anaerobic respiration equation (animal): glucose = lactic acid + carbon dioxide
• Anaerobic respiration equation: glucose = (with yeast(fungi)) ethanol (alcohol) + carbon dioxide
• Aerobic respiration takes place in the mitochondria
• Respiration is a biochemical process because it forms a product but also occurs in a living thing
